Divisional Railway Hospital Nagpur organises Organ Donation Awareness

  • The Medical Department of Divisional Railway Hospital of Central Railway, Nagpur organized a Seminar organ & tissue donation awareness program on 21st October 2016 in the impressive Gunjan Sabhagruha in the DRM office. Shri. Brijesh Kumar Gupta the DRM of Central Railway was the Chief Guest. Dr. V. K. Assudani the Chief Medical Superintendant of the Divisional Hospital organized the seminar. Dr. Mrs. Meera Arora who was overall in-charge of the event. A wonderful poster display was exhibited in the entrance of the hall which gave overall knowledge about the subject. Rangoli was made by the talented staff of the Railway Hospital at the same place. The guest speakers were Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Padmashree Dr. Vikas Mahatme (Hon’ Member of the Rajya Sabha), Dr. Vasudeo Ridhorkar and  Dr. Sameer Jahagirdar.

    Dr. V. K. Assudani gave an introductory talk and thanked Mr. Shri. Brijesh Kumar Gupta the DRM of Central Railway for taking personal interest in the subject. He thanked the staff of Hospital for working hard in organizing the seminar. Dr. Mrs. Meera Arora introduced Dr. Ravi Wankhede and other speakers with brilliance. Dr. Ravi Wankhede gave an overall information about the need and importance of organ donation. He covered the social, legal, administrative aspect of donation from Live, after death and from people who are brain dead through an impressive PPP. He informed the audience that the Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi spoke on the subject in the Man ki baat series on 25th October 2015. Dr. Wankhede said there are millions in the country who lead a pathetic life as their organs such as Kidneys, liver, heart, etc have irreversible failed leaving no option but to the required organ transplantation. He said organ donation from brain dead is a routine practice in the developed countries, but in India the figure is pathetic. This he said was due to lack of awareness and dogmas. Dr. Wankhede told the audience that after death, the body is either burnt or buried, so why not donate the organs which could be useful to several people.

    Padmashree Dr. Vikas Mahatme spoke on eye donation with his lucid presentation. He explained the procedure, the need and the rationale behind eye donation which should be a routine procedure after natural death. He lamented that India still lags behind in Eye donation by 50% percent. Dr. Mahatme showed a video on the procedure to be carried out within six hours of death. Dr. Vaduseo Ridhorkar, kidney transplant surgeon gave a detailed presentation on the need for kidney transplantation and the type of donors. He said, live donors can never meet the huge requirement of the kidneys. The only source of kidneys and other organs are from cadaver (brain dead patients).

    Dr. Sameer Jahagirgar renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, who is also in-charge of the Rotary and Orange city Hospital Skin Bank gave a detailed presentation on the harvesting from dead patients within six hour just like in eye donation. He informed that skin graft is very effective, economical and give wonderful results in burn cases. Dr. Sunil Keswani, a pioneer in Skin Banking from Mumbai was also invited to be present, having come to Nagpur for an academic function. Dr. Keswani in his short speech said that skin donation should be done along with eye donation.

    The Chief Guest Mr. Shri. Brijesh Kumar Gupta the DRM of Central Railway spoke at the end of the seminar and said, organ donation is the best service to mankind, as after death people should donate whatever is feasible, before cremation or burial. He agreed to the request of Dr. Ravi Wankhede to help in spreading awareness on the Organ donation day by distributing handouts in all major trains passing from Nagpur, being in the center of the country.

    Transplant Coordinators Kanchan Shewde and Bulu Behara worked hard at the stall with banners and pamphlets & pledge forms. They answered to all the queries from those present on the occasion. 25 people visited the stall out of which 15 signed pledged to donate organs.
