On May 26, 2026, a virtual awareness session on organ donation was organised by the MOHAN Foundation for students of Naga Hospital College of Nursing at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) auditorium. This marked one of the organisation’s initial public awareness initiatives in the state. The session commenced with Mr. Lirenthung N. Kithan, Project Lead, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland, introducing the organisation and the resource person, Dr Muneet Kaur Sahi, Programme Manager (NCR), MOHAN Foundation.
Dr. Muneet initiated the session by screening a short film titled Donate Organs and Save Lives by Vijay, which conveyed the poignant message that “death is not the end” and highlighted how organ donation can give others a second chance at life. She then covered key topics including national statistics on organ donation, challenges faced in India, eligibility criteria for donors, types of organs that can be donated, and appropriate timing for donation. A clear distinction between coma and brain death was explained using visual aids. She also discussed various aspects of living organ donation, along with the major provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, emphasising that the commercial trade of human organs is strictly prohibited and punishable by law.
The session further addressed eye donation, common myths and facts about organ donation, and whole body donation. Dr. Muneet encouraged participants to contribute individually by pledging to donate their organs and, importantly, by informing their families of their wishes. The role of MOHAN Foundation, its social media platforms and volunteer training programme were also shared to promote continued engagement.
Participants were invited to share their prior knowledge and experiences related to organ donation. Many indicated that their awareness stemmed primarily from portrayals in films. To reinforce learning, informational brochures on organ donation were distributed by Ms. Sedekieno Rino, Programme Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland.
Close to 50 participants attended the session. It successfully enhanced their awareness, knowledge, and understanding of organ donation and its procedures.
