Seminar on Organ Donation at M J Sathak College of Nursing

  • M J Sathak College of Nursing was established  to develop skilled professionals in nursing and health care. MOHAN Foundation was given an opportunity to create awareness on Organ Donation on December 5, 2022. Around 150 students of 1st and 2nd year BSC Nursing gathered in the Seminar Hall to attend the seminar. Ms. Arshiya Fathima. H and Dr. Hemal Kanvinde  of MOHAN Foundation were the resource persons for the sessions.

    The session was started by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde with an interactive session by asking the students to write 2 questions on organ and tissue donation and had a discussion with students.

    Ms. Arshiya Fathima. H began the session with a motivational video. She then gave a talk on the Concept of Organ Donation and Transplantation which included who, what, when and how donation can happen. She explained Brain Death, skin and eye donation, voluntary body donation. At the end of the session a video explaining brain stem death was played.

    In order to establish the complex nature of deceased donation, a activity based learning was conducted by Dr Hemal Kanvinde. Titled 10 Step protocol  for a Successful Deceased Organ Donation, wherein many students participated. 

    A quiz was conducted based of the concepts of Organ donation by Ms Arshiya. Students participated actively and answered the questions thereby reinforcing the learning.

    The seminar ended with Dr. Hemal giving brochures of training courses and explained  to them the process of registration and value of a transplant coordinator. 

    Students pledged to donate their organs, 35 students collected their donor cards. Discussion on  some topics were:  

    1. If person dies due to natural causes what is the procedure for voluntary donation.

    2. The Ambassador course.

    3. Skin donation procedure and to whom is the skin given.

    4. How to register if the person is in need of kidney.

    5. Whether lung cancer patient  is a candidate for transplant 

    6. Can addicts to drug or liquor be organ donors 

     

    The session ended with Vote of Thanks by  a student.  Dr. Hemal presented training brochures and “Stories of Transplant“ book to Principal.
