A sensitization programme was organized for the 3rd year nursing students of School of Nursing, Madurai Medical College on 22nd May 2017 between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Mr. S.Venkatesh, Transplant Coordinator, Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai addressed the gathering. The programme was attended by 73 student nurses.
The following topics were addressed during the session - concepts of organ donation and transplantation, brain death, role of nurse, need and importance of deceased organ donation, myths and misconceptions about donating organs and tissues, counselling the families of a deceased donor, and the legal aspects of organ donation and transplantation. The participants were also informed about the transplant coordinator training programme.
The session was very interactive as the participants were asking so many queries pertaining to the process of organ donation, distribution of organs, etc., At the end, everyone pledged to become an organ donor and picked up their donor cards.
