Awareness Session on Organ Donation conducted at Dental Out Patient Department (OPD), Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK)

  • On June 19, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Dental Out Patient Department (OPD) as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was conducted by Mr. Lirenthung N. Kithan, Project Lead, MOHAN Foundation, and attended by Ms. Sedekieno Rino, Programme Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland.

     

    Mr. Lirenthung commenced the session by sharing an introduction to the vision and mission of MOHAN Foundation. He informed the participants that Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) is working towards the implementation of the Human Organ Retrieval and Transplantation programme, which is expected to benefit the people of the state in the future.

     

    During the session, detailed information on organ donation was shared, including its significance, the different organs that can be donated, who can become an organ donor, and the stages during which organ donation is possible. The concept of brain death was also explained, along with a clear distinction between brain death and coma.

     

    The session further covered the laws governing organ donation and transplantation in India under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA). Participants were informed about the strict legal action and penalties imposed on anyone involved in the commercial trading of human organs or other violations related to organ transplantation.

     

    In addition, information on eye donation was shared, highlighting its importance in restoring vision to individuals suffering from corneal blindness. Several myths and facts surrounding organ donation were also discussed to address common misconceptions among the participants. The concept of a donor card, its importance, and the process through which individuals can voluntarily pledge themselves as organ donors by registering and carrying a donor card were also explained.

     

    Ms. Sedekieno distributed informational flyers on organ donation among the participants to further strengthen awareness and understanding on the subject.

     

    Close to 15 participants attended the awareness session.
