Organ donation awareness at Smt. Kishoritai Bhoyar College of Pharmacy

  • MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur was invited by Dr. Milind Umekar principal of the Smt. Kishoritai Bhoyar College of Pharmacy, Kamptee, Nagpur on 13 August 2018 to give a talk on organ donation awareness.  

    Dr. Anjali Bhandarkar MD (Obstetrics & Gynecology) of ESIC Hospital, Tukudoji square, Nagpur, She is guest speaker of MOHAN Foundation. She gave a presentation on the Organ, Tissue and Body donation. She said man is endowed to serve mankind while and after living. In spite of great progress done by the country there is a deficiency of blood in blood banks, not enough corneas are available in the eye banks and there is also huge requirement of life saving organs such as kidneys, liver. heart, etc. She said organs can be donated by living donors, but what is more relevant  is that several organs and tissues can be donated after death, more specifically after brain death. She explained ‘brain death’ and said such person can help save lives of about 8 people besides donating tissues such as a pair of eyes and skin. She told the audience that Nagpur is fortunate to have a skin bank. She emphasized Eees and skin can be donated after natural death as well as brain death. She explained in detail the following topics :

    • Types of organ donation types and who can be a donor.
    • The status of Organ Donation in India and their requirement Vs donation rates
    • He spoke about the myths surrounding organ donation which should be a matter of the past.
    • Difference between natural death and brain death
    • Age is not a constraint in donating their organs.
    • Importance of donor card
    • To pledge their organs they can register at MOHAN Foundation
    • Request to use MOHAN Foundation website and helpline number

    Few questions asked by the participants

    v  Can a donor can donate kidney after brain death?

    v  What difference between coma and brain death?

    v  What is body donation process?

    All the questions were answered and most of the participants picked up pamphlets and consent form which would be submitted by the office bearers to the MOHAN Foundation. 20 participants took donor cards of the 70 who were present. In the end they showed interest to continue to do more programs with MOHAN Foundation.
