  • On May 12, 2025, the auspicious occasion of Buddha Jayanti, The Uruvela Co-operative Housing Society Ltd. and Uruvela Buddha Vihar Samiti, Nagpur, jointly organized an Organ Donation Sensitization Session to raise awareness about the noble cause of organ and body donation.

Dr. Susheel Meshram, Professor at Sewadal Mahila Mahavidyalaya and an esteemed member of the Dehadaan Samiti, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur, was invited as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, Dr. Meshram delivered an insightful talk on "Buddha Dhamma towards Dehadaan". He highlighted the significance of body donation as rooted in the Buddhist principle of Daan Paramita—the perfection of giving. According to Buddhist teachings, Daan is a noble and selfless act, performed for the welfare of humanity and society. He emphasized that the act of donating one's body or organs is deeply aligned with the teachings of Lord Buddha, promoting compassion and altruism.

Following Dr. Meshram’s address, Ms. Veena Wathore, Project Manager at MOHAN Foundation – Nagpur, sensitized the audience—particularly the Buddha Upasakas (followers of the Buddha)—on the importance and impact of organ donation. She elaborated on how deceased organ donation can give a new lease on life to those suffering from organ failure and highlighted the pressing need for such donations in India. She also pointed out the disparity in live organ donation, with a significant number of female donors, often due to social and familial pressures, and how deceased donation could ease that burden.

During the interactive session, the audience actively participated and raised several questions, such as:

    • Does the donor’s family receive any financial benefit after donation?
    • Why are Green Corridors created?
    • Is the body handed over to relatives after organ donation?

Around 56 audiences attended the session and 6 of them pledged to donate their Organs.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Adv. Mrs. Dhoble, followed by a renewed commitment from the attendees to raise awareness about organ and body donation in their communities, inspired by the compassionate teachings of Lord Buddha.
