Organ Donation Awareness for Two Lions Club Chapters in Chennai

  • On October 21, 2020, MOHAN Foundation addressed the Lions Club members of two Chennai city chapters on the subject of organ donation. The sessions were organized by a Lions club member
    Ms. Srilakshmi Mohan Rao.

    The first session at 5 PM, in English, had participants belonging to the Lions Club of Madras South City and the speaker was Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer of MOHAN Foundation. The Club’s President, Ln Ms. Sujatha and Secretary, Ln Ms. Nirmala welcomed and introduced the speaker to the participants.

    Ms. Ishwarya from MOHAN Foundation was the speaker for the Tamil session at 9 PM addressing the members of Lions Club of Chennai South Stars. Both Ln Ms. Girija Sampath, the Club President and the Secretary Ln Ms. S Sakuntala were present.

    During both the sessions the following topics were discussed in detail:

    • Organ failure and causes
    • Circulatory and brain death
    • Difference between brain death and coma
    • Types of donors
    • Organ and tissue donation while living and after death
    • Hand and uterus transplants
    • Age criteria to donate organs
    • Importance of family consent in organ donation process
    • Transplant waitlist, organ allocation and TRANSTAN
    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act
    • Organ Donation Statistics from Tamil Nadu, India and world
    • Myths and misconceptions around organ donation
    • How to pledge organs

     

    There were around 20 participants present in both sessions. A range of questions including can someone with diabetes donate organs, what would happen if the donor card goes missing and can the corneas of someone with eye problems be donated were answered.

    The group was enthusiastic and promised to organize activities to promote and support the cause. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to the Lions Club for organizing the awareness sessions and supporting the cause of organ donation.
