Organ Donation Awareness for Police Officials in Salem

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness programme for the Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors of the Police Department in Salem. The session took place in at the in-service training centre in Salem on 06th November 2019. Mr. Siva Shankar T S – Marketing Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation and Mr. Dileep – Transplant Coordinator, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem were the speakers.

    Mr. Siva Shankar’s presentation on the concepts of organ donation covered the following topics:

    • Organ Donation and the need for it in the society
    • The organ transplant waiting list in Tamilnadu
    • Organ and tissues that can be donated while living and after death
    • Authorities involved in organ donation
    • Organ Donation rates in India
    • Donor Card
    • Toll-free Helpline Number of MOHAN Foundation

    The next speaker, Mr Dileep described the role of police, explaining their duties while handling an organ donation case in a hospital. He spoke about the following in detail:

    • The forms that are issued by the transplant coordinator to the police officials to be filled and submitted
    • Who intimates the police officials about conducting an inquest

    A few questions posed by the officials included:

    1. When should the police reach the hospital during an organ donation case?
    2. Is organ donation possible only during medico-legal cases?
    3. Can the brain be transplanted?

    There were around 28 officers in attendance. MOHAN Foundation would like to thank the In-service Training Centre for the opportunity to help the officials understand their role in organ donation.
