Police Officials in Coimbatore learn about Organ Donation

  • An awareness programme on organ donation was organized for the police officials of Coimbatore to help them understand their role in processing organ donation cases on 05th November 2019. Mr. Siva Shankar T S – Marketing Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation and Mr. Nishanth – Transplant Coordinator, Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital were the speakers for the session.

    Mr. Siva Shankar with a presentation on the concepts of organ donation and explained the following points in detail:

    • Organ Donation and the need for it in today’s society
    • Waitlist in Tamil Nadu for organ transplant
    • Organ donation while living and after death
    • Authorities involved in organ donation
    • Organ donation rates in India
    • Importance of the Donor Card
    • Helpline Number of the Foundation

    Mr. Nishanth, the next speaker spoke about the role of police, explaining their duties while handling an organ donation case in a hospital. The following were elaborated:

    • The forms that are issued by the transplant coordinators to the police officials to be filled and submitted
    • Who intimates the police officials about conducting an inquest

    The session went on two and half hours for around 40 inspectors and sub-inspectors who asked a few questions including, when should the police be reaching the hospital during a possible organ donation scenario. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to the In-service Training Centre for the opportunity.
