Organ Donation Awareness at Sree Balaji College of Nursing, Chennai

  • On September 18th 2019, MOHAN Foundation was invited by Dr. V. Hemavathy the Principal of Sree Balaji College of Nursing in Chrompet, Chennai to conduct an awareness programme for the students. The welcome address was given by Prof. Girija, Faculty of Nursing. The programme started around 2.30 PM and over 140 II and III year nursing students and a few faculty participated in the programme. Ms. Ishwarya, Research Associate addressed the audience by giving an introduction about MOHAN Foundation and explained about organ and tissue donation.

     

    An elaborate presentation on organ donation was given by Ms. Ishwarya and assisted by Ms. R Juhija, Bio-statistician. She also explained the Transplantation of Human Organs Act and its objectives. Ms. Ishwarya briefly explained the following topics:

    • Organ failure and causes
    • Circulatory death and brain death
    • Difference between brain death and coma
    • Living and deceased donations
    • Related and unrelated donors
    • Organ donation and age limit
    • Time period in organ retrieval
    • Myths and facts related to organ donation
    • Role of nurses in organ donation
    • Organ donation in media
    • National and international organ donation statistics
    • Transplant waitlist in Tamil Nadu

     

    Ms. Sunitha A T, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation explained about grief counseling through case studies. She elaborated on the stages of grief, do’s and don’ts of counseling, importance of staff nurses in organ donation and interacting with families. The programme came to an end at 4 PM with Prof. Girija delivering the vote of thanks. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to Sree Balajee College of Nursing for the opportunity to educate their students about organ donation.
