Organ Donation Awareness at CIIHO Hospital, Dhantoli, Nagpur on World Blood Donor Day

  • On 14th June 2021, MOHAN Foundation, in association with Transplants – Help the Poor Foundation conducted Organ Donation Awareness session along with Blood Donation camp. The program was organised by Mr Ajij Sheikh (PRO of CIIHO Blood Bank) on the occasion of ‘World Blood Donor Day’ for hospital staff and Blood Donor volunteers at CIIHO (Central India Institute of Haematologist and Oncologist) Cancer Hospital and Blood Bank, Dhantoli, Nagpur.

    The session was conducted under the guidance of Dr Avinash Pophali (Haematologist and Oncologist). The session was attended by in-house doctors, staff, OPD patients and their relatives. Ms Prarthana Dwivedi, Transplant Coordinator was the speaker for session.

    She explained the concepts of organ donation, why and when is transplantation required, various organs that can be donated, types of donors, types of death, viability of organs after retrieval, difference between brain death and coma, Transplantation of Human Organs Act, myths and misconceptions related to organ donation. Information about the toll-free organ donation helpline (1800 103 7100) was also shared.

    The following were a few questions asked:

    • Will the body be disfigured following donation?
    • What are the organs that can be donated while living?
    • How to register as an organ donor online?
    • How will a family know about a registered organ donors’ wish after his death?
    • For how long can corneas be stored?

    Total 121 units blood collected all members are participated in blood donation campaign to help Cancer patients. About 175 participants attended session and around 45 pledges were taken and few pledged online.  MOHAN Foundation is thankful to CIIHO Hospital, Blood Bank and Dr Avinash Pophali for supporting the cause of Organ Donation.
