On November 16, 2025, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador with the MOHAN Foundation, conducted an awareness session on organ donation during the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) Members’ Meeting of Our Lady of Flight Church in Cunchelim, Goa.
Gabriel opened the session by asking attendees what they understood about organ donation. He found that many believed organ donation was only possible if a person died at home and was taken to the hospital within a certain timeframe.
He then clarified the core concepts of organ donation and invited the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Cruz Fernandes, to share his intention of circulating an animated short film created by Shweta Gupta. This film, along with a detailed explainer on brain death, could be shared via the church’s WhatsApp group, enabling parishioners to access these resources and develop a deeper understanding of the subject.
Gabriel noted that while members were familiar with the hospitals in Goa where transplants occur, many were unaware of which organs and tissues are actually transplanted in the state. He shared that Goa currently has 83 individuals on the transplant waiting list. Over the past five years, eight brain-dead donors have enabled sixteen Goans to receive a new lease on life.
He emphasised that public awareness sessions play a crucial role in helping people understand organ donation and encouraged members to share this information with their families, friends, and the wider community.
To conclude the session, Gabriel distributed 20 flyers containing frequently asked questions about organ donation and pointed out that those interested in pledging their organs could scan the QR code provided on the back of the flyer.
Gabriel expressed his gratitude to Rev. Fr. Cruz Fernandes and all the PPC members for giving MOHAN Foundation the opportunity to present and explain the concepts of organ donation.
