On July 6, 2026, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Conference Hall of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, for the nursing students of Catholic Medical Centre, Koirengei, who were undergoing their clinical posting at JNIMS.
The session was facilitated by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator – Northeast and Project Lead, Manipur, MOHAN Foundation, and Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Manipur. They were accompanied by Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Manipur.
Ms. Priya commenced the session by welcoming the students, introducing the MOHAN Foundation team, providing a brief overview of MOHAN Foundation and its initiatives, and outlining the objectives of the awareness programme.
Ms. Laishram Monica Devi then delivered an overview of organ donation, explaining the concepts of living and deceased organ donation, the organs and tissues that can be donated, and the life-saving impact of organ transplantation. She focused on deceased organ donation, the donor registration process through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), and the importance of informing family members about one's decision to pledge. She also highlighted Manipur's progress in organ donation, informed the participants about the authorized transplant centres in the state, explained the key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) 1994, addressed common myths and misconceptions, and encouraged the students to pledge their organs after death, emphasizing that a single deceased organ donor can save multiple lives.
At the end of the session, a student expressed her gratitude to the team and shared that she was encouraged to learn that organ transplantation facilities are available in Manipur. She reflected on losing her father to liver disease due to the unavailability of a suitable donor and urged her classmates to support organ donation.
During the interactive session, participants were asked about their reasons for not pledging to donate their organs at present. One student shared that she felt uncomfortable with the idea of organ donation because she believed her organs had been a part of her since birth. In response, Ms. Laishram Monica Devi explained that organ donation takes place only after a person's death and elaborated on the process of deceased organ donation. She addressed the student's concerns, by clarifying the misconception, enabling her to better understand the concept and encouraging all participants to make informed decisions regarding organ donation.
The programme concluded with Ms. Laishram Monica Devi encouraging participants to reach out to MOHAN Foundation's Manipur office through its toll-free helpline for any queries or assistance regarding organ donation. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on organ donation were distributed at the end of the session to reinforce the key messages shared. The awareness programme reached close to 50 nursing students.
