Organ Donation Awareness Session on Earth Day at Meteorological Department, Chandigarh

  • On the occasion of Earth Day, the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, under the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), organized an awareness session on organ donation on April 22, 2026. The session was part of the department’s broader initiative to integrate social responsibility with environmental consciousness.

    Earth Day is celebrated worldwide to promote sustainability and collective responsibility toward the environment. In 2026, the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, under IMS, extended the scope of this observance by organizing an awareness session on organ donation. The initiative sought to integrate environmental consciousness with humanitarian responsibility, underscoring the parallels between ecological renewal and the life-saving potential of organ donation.

    The objectives of the session were designed to:

    • Disseminate accurate information about organ and tissue donation
    • Address myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation
    • Encourage voluntary pledges among participants
    • Connect the ideals of Earth Day with the humanitarian act of saving lives

    The session commenced with a welcome address by senior officials of the Meteorological Department, who emphasized the dual importance of caring for the planet and for humanity. The session was initiated by Ms. Preeti Gupta, who introduced MF-SRDF along with its mission and vision. She emphasized the importance of organ donation as a “gift of life.” The scope of organ donation was comprehensively covered through a series of articles and discussions:

    • The concept of organ and tissue donation and its life-saving impact.
    • The current status of organ donation in India, highlighting the gap between requirements and donation rates.
    • Clarification of terms such as live related and live unrelated donation.
    • Explanation of the differences between natural death, brain death, and coma states.
    • Dispelling myths surrounding organ donation by providing factual information.
    • Sharing real-life stories of successful organ transplants.
    • Encouraging participants to discuss organ donation with their families to foster openness and informed decision-making.

    The session achieved significant outcomes, including heightened awareness among participants and a measurable increase in voluntary pledges for organ donation. The initiative demonstrated the capacity of government departments to extend their influence beyond technical domains, contributing meaningfully to public health and social welfare. Furthermore, the integration of environmental and humanitarian themes provided a novel framework for future awareness campaigns.
