On July 9, 2025, MOHAN Foundation conducted an organ donation awareness session for bus drivers at the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) Training School, Nand Nagri Depot, New Delhi. The session was led by Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation NCR, and Ms. Sanya Santosh, Programme Officer, NCR.
Ms. Simran began with an interactive discussion to understand participants’ existing knowledge about organ donation, followed by a presentation explaining the current organ donation landscape in India, the basics of organ donation, and how transplants work.
To help participants grasp the concept of “brain death,” a short educational video was shown, after which Ms. Simran explained the procedures involved in confirming brain death and its legal significance.
Key topics covered included the need for organ donation, eligibility to become a donor, the difference between living and deceased donors, and the types of organs and tissues that can be donated. Ms. Simran also spoke about eye donation and the steps to preserve the cornea after death. She provided a brief overview of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, and highlighted MOHAN Foundation’s efforts to promote organ donation and how individuals can support the cause. Common myths and facts about organ donation, and the difference between coma and brain death, were also addressed.
During the session, one participant asked if his organs could be retrieved without family consent if he pledged to donate. Ms. Simran clarified that in India, organ retrieval after brain death occurs only after the family is thoroughly counselled and provides written consent, explaining that India follows an opt-in system.
Another participant shared that his daughter, who lost her eyesight in an accident, is currently awaiting a corneal transplant at AIIMS, New Delhi, and inquired about the average waiting period for such transplants.
The session was attended by around 40 participants.
