Organ Donation Awareness Program at GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute), Chennai

  • An awareness program on organ donation was organized at GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute) on 26th November 2014. About 60 employees attended the program. They manage the emergency number 108 and health number 104 for Tamil Nadu.  The program started with a welcome address by Mr. Prabhudoss, Head - Marketing & Hospital relations, GVK EMRI. In his speech, he mentioned that awareness on organ donation is the most important need of the time and being a pioneer in emergency management services, GVK EMRI has taken this initiative to sensitize its staff.

     

    Ms. Sujatha Niranjan, MOHAN Foundation introduced the concepts of organ donation and brain death to the audience. The need for organ donation, the various myths and misconceptions involved in donating organs were discussed. A few donor stories were shared with the audience which was felt heart-warming and motivating. The participants came up with various doubts such as organ allocation criteria, the contraindications for organ donation, role of family in deceased organ donation, procedures for whole body donation. All the doubts were clarified.  The participants assured that they will keep spreading the message and motivate the others to support the cause. About 40 participants took a pledge to be an organ donator and picked up a donor card.
