Online awareness session on Organ Donation conducted at ICICI Foundation Academy For Skills, Christian Basti, Guwahati

  • On November 7, 2022, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an online awareness session on organ donation for the students pursuing livelihood training from ICICI Academy for Skills, Guwahati. The session was part of a drive that is being conducted by MOHAN Foundation (MF), pursuant to collaboration between Transplants Help the Poor Foundation and ICICI Foundation. MOHAN Foundation works closely with Transplants Help the Poor Foundation. As part of the campaign, sessions to raise awareness will be held at other ICICI Foundation locations in different cities across India. 

     

    Ms Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation Manipur, was the resource person and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Co-ordinator, MOHAN Foundation accompanied her.

     

    Mr. Rupam Sharmah, Centre Head, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, Guwahati, coordinated with MOHAN Foundation to organize these sessions. The sessions were held for two groups of 103 and 78 students between the ages of 18 and 30. The session was conducted by Ms. Monica.

     

    Mr. Rupam Sharma welcomed the MOHAN Foundation faculty and introduced them to the students and the purpose of the talk. Ms. Monica began the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its objectives and visions. Following which the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation were explained with the help of a PowerPoint presentation.

     

    Points explained in detail:

    • Organ donation & its need.
    • Types of donations.
    • Status of organ donation & transplant waiting list in India.
    • Laws enacted for transplantation.
    • National Organ Transplant Programme.
    • Brain death
    • Facts and myths on organ donation.
    • Importance of the donor card.
    • How to pledge or sign up for organ donation on MOHAN Foundation's website.
    • The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation.

     

    The session was interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and raised queries, such as:   

    • Process to follow if someone wants to pledge for organ donation.
    • Who can be an organ donor?
    • Status of organ donation in north-eastern region.

     

    The participants were keen in discussing the cause of organ donation with their families and friends. And the end of the session, Mr. Rupam thanked Ms. Monica for providing in depth information to the students of the centre. 7 students came forward to pledge for organ donation through MOHAN Foundation.

     

    Close to 181 participants attended the session.
