National webinar for Organ Donation Awareness among the deaf and speech impaired on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day

  • On 13th Aug 2021 at around 2 pm on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day awareness session was conducted by MOHAN Foundation, in association with Rotary Club of Indore Adarsh ​​and in collaboration with Anand Service Society Indore, Pahal Foundation Parbhani and Rotary Club of Faridabad. This webinar was organised on organ donation for the public and the deaf across India. The program was organized by Dr Jimmy Gupta on behalf of MOHAN Foundation. The webinar translation was done in Indian Sign Language (ISL) by Rotarian Mr Gyanendra Purohit and Mrs Monica Purohit.

    President of the Rotary Club of Indore Adarsh Hatim Anant gave the welcome speech. Dr Jimmy Gupta introduced MOHAN Foundation its Mission, Vision and then she explained the concept of organ and tissue donation. Then she explained types of death i.e. cardiac death, brain death. She also explained in detail about brain death declaration through Apnoea test and procedure of deceased organ donation and live organ donation. She elaborated procedure of skin, eye and bone donation along with the advances in transplant.

    After that Dr Jimmy explained Barriers of organ donation i.e. myths and facts related to Organ Donation and how it impacts on Organ Donation. She also explained about the Donor Card and how one can become an Organ Donor and elaborated the volunteering training activities conducted by MOHAN Foundation for volunteers interested to support the noble cause of organ donation. Details of Organ Donation Helpline No 1800 103 7100 was also shared. Online link to the donor card was shared in order to enable the public to take pledge. About 214 participants attended session.

    Miss India 2021 (Deaf Category) Ms Varsha Dongre who is deaf and speech impaired also took pledge to do Organ Donation. Around 200 deaf and speech impaired persons had also taken pledge to do organ donation. On this occasion District Governor of Rotary District 3040 Colonel Mahendra Mishra greeted Rotary club for this noble and unique project. The chairman of the Disability affairs committee Tom George and the chairman of the club's organ donation committee, Matthew Abraham have a special contribution in this project.

    Dr Hemant Atri, president of Rotary Club of Faridabad appreciated this project and has shown interest in conducting the blood donation camp of deaf and speech impaired persons at Faridabad and Gurgaon locations. Lastly Dr Lalita Sharma gave vote of thanks.

    Mr Gyanendra and Mrs Monica Purohit also shared story of Mr Surendra Maurya that after the death of his deaf son Chahat Maurya last year, he had donated his eyes on the inspiration of the Ananda Service Society, due to which a blind person had got eyesight.
