  • The 79th Annual Session of Indian Roads Congress was held in Nagpur from 22nd – 25th November 2018. Indian Roads Congress (IRC) is one of the leading technical bodies of Highway Engineers in the country. MOHAN Foundation was invited by Mr. Vivek Mishra, the Technical Exhibition In-charge to set up an awareness stall on all 4 days of the session. The Divisional Sports Complex Stadium, Mankapur Road, Nagpur was the venue and Mr. Bulu Behera was the resource person from MOHAN Foundation.

The stall was equipped with information brochures, donor cards, banners, etc. Photographs of organs modeled using human ashes from an award-winning exhibit ‘Life Before Ashes’ were also on display to emphasize the message of organ donation. The stall visitors were able to obtain information on the following points:

    • What is organ donation?
    • Who can donate organs?
    • Types of donors
    • Types of death
    • Information about the Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA) 1994
    • Difference between coma and brain death
    • Age limit for organ donation and tissue donation
    • Myths related organ donation
    • How to use the helpline number and MOHAN Foundation website

Across the 4 days, the stall received close to 180 visitors and more than 30 people pledged their organs. The visitors found the stall to be informative and had the following questions:

    • Does the government offer any incentives to the donor families?
    • How would MOHAN Foundation get to know about the death of an individual who has registered as a donor?
    • Who makes the decisions related to organ allocation?
    • What would be the cost for a heart transplant?
    • Following brain death who should be contacted for donation?
    • What is the process for eye donation?
    • How many patients are in the kidney transplant waitlist of Nagpur?
    • What is bone marrow and how is it important?
    • How does MOHAN Foundation benefit from its work?
    • What is the difference between coma and brain death?
    • Where is the MOHAN Foundation office located in Nagpur?

Mr Bulu was able to answer all these questions and make sure that the takeaway for the crowd was right information about organ donation. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to IRC and Mr. Vivek for the opportunity.
