  • On September 25, 2023, MOHAN Foundation was invited to deliver a talk on “Process of Deceased Organ Donation” at Kripadashini Advanced Hospital and Research Institute (KAHRI), Palace Ground, Imphal. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation was the keynote speaker. Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation was also invited for the session.

Kripadashini Advanced Hospital and Research Institute is a 100-bed multi-specialty hospital. The hospital is well-known in the city for its neuro-specialty services. The first deceased organ donation in Manipur was made possible by the hospital's quick response in contacting the MOHAN Foundation counsellors after the brain death case had been identified in their hospital. Although the hospital staff was unaware of the coordination of a deceased organ donation case, they supported and assisted in its implementation. As a result, the session was planned to sensitize the hospital staff about organ donation and the donation process.

Mr. Shanti Sharma, Administrative Officer, KAHRI, coordinated the whole programme. He highlighted the contributions made by MOHAN Foundation in the augmentation of the first deceased organ donation in Manipur. Mrs. Suchitra Gurumayum, Managing Director, KAHRI; Resident Medical Officers, nursing supervisors, staff nurses and ICU technicians of the institute attended the session.

Ms. Monica began the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its objectives and visions. She informed about the various activities and projects taken up by the team in the field of organ donation. Then, she covered various aspects, such as:

Facts and figures of persons waiting for transplant.

    Organ donation rate in India.

    Organ donation and its needs.

    Types of donors.

    Law enacted for transplantation.

Brain Death and the 1st case of potential brain death turning into actual deceased donor in Manipur.

The process involved in making donation successful.

    Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centers (NTORC).

The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation.

Process of pledge registration on the website of National Organs and Tissues Transplant

    Organisation (NOTTO).

    Courses offered by MOHAN Foundation.

Later, a short Q & A session was done where participants raised few queries. To name a few:

    • Even if a person does not pledge for organ donation during his or her lifetime, is it possible to donate if consent is given by family members when he or she is brain dead?

    • Who should be contacted for donation of corneas in case of circulatory death at home?

    • At the end of the programme, FAQs on organ donation were distributed for better understanding. MF team thanked Mr. Shanti for taking such initiatives for the cause of organ donation.

Close to 40 participants attended the session.
