  • On December 16, 2022, MOHAN Foundation was invited to a meeting of the heads of various departments of Amrita Hospital, Faridabad to discuss the implementation of the deceased organ donation programme. Ms Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi NCR was approached by Dr. Urmila Anandh, HOD Nephrology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad to lead this discussion.

The main objective of this meeting was to help Amrita Hospital to lay out a road map to give an impetus to deceased organ donation in their hospital.

The meeting included Dr. Sanjay Singh (Managing Director), Dr. Anandh B. (HOD, Neurosurgery), Dr. Urmila Anandh (HOD, Nephrology), Dr. Dinesh Balakrishnan (Consultant, HPB, Solid Organ Transplant), Dr. Vandana Saurja (Senior Consultant & Additional Professor, Anaesthesia & Critical Care), Transplant Coordinators, Social workers and some others from the admin department.

Ms. Pallavi started the discussion with a presentation that outlined the various factors that ensure the success of a deceased donation programme in a hospital, such as collective ownership and inter-departmental coordination, the formation of a steering committee to lead and monitor the program, the setting up of robust SOPs (Standard Operating Protocols) at every step, early identification and certification of brain death, and conducting activities to promote organ donation within the hospital and in the community.

She also shared with the group the various training modules available with the MOHAN Foundation and the online apps that have been created to assist in the identification, certification, and maintenance of brain death. She also clarified about the role of NOTTO, ROTTO and SOTTO with the participants and need for a seamless alliance with NOTTO for the purpose of organ allocation.

A discussion followed the presentation, and the Managing Director of Amrita hospital expressed that the team would get together and discuss and set into motion all that is needed to make the deceased donation programme happen at the earliest possible time.

The team sought MOHAN Foundation’s help in crating awareness both within and outside the hospital.

Many brain death cases are medico legal cases and the support of the police and the forensic becomes paramount. It was discussed that efforts should be made to sensitise the nearest police and forensic facility to streamline this process so that timely action can be taken and organs can be retrieved with minimum discomfort to the donating families.

Need for training for the medical professionals was also felt, as many doctors themselves remain unaware about brain death. It was also felt that there is a need for a continuous dialogue of such nature and cooperation between all the stakeholders if a robust state organ donation program has to be initiated.

The meeting was attended by 16 senior medical professionals from the hospital.
