On September 20th 2014, Dr. Christopher Barry, Advisory Board Member of MOHAN Foundation and Transplant Surgeon from Rochester, New York, visited the Madurai Rotary Club to give a speech on “Healthy Lifestyles for Healthy Organs”. This was an initiative of Mr Srikanth.
The speech focused on chronic diseases common to the Indian population such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and fatty liver disease, as well as touching upon the importance of organ donation. Common symptoms, treatments, and ways to avoid these diseases were reviewed. Dr. Barry emphasized the importance of a balanced diet, not to overeat, and regular exercise in preventing these ailments before they become chronic.
Deceased donor transplant and organ donation facts were also discussed. The Rotary Club meeting was attended by representatives from several local chapters in and around Madurai and the audience was interested and enthusiastically curious. Most Rotarians present had already pledged their organs for donation.
