MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness cum organ donation pledge drive at Community Health Center, Sagolmang, Imphal

  • On September 25, 2023, the MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness-raising organ donation pledge drive at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Sagolmang, which was jointly organised by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Imphal-East, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal. As representatives of MOHAN Foundation, Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, participated in the campaign.

     

    The programme was attended by Prof. Laishram Deben Singh, Director, JNIMS; Prof. Kh. Lokeshwar Singh, Medical Superintendent, JNIMS; Dr. L. Indira Devi, CMO, Imphal-East; Dr. Sucheta Sinam, State Nodal Officer, Ayushman Bhava Campaign, Manipur; and Dr. Mutum Vivekson, District Nodal Officer, Ayushman Bhava Campaign, Manipur. Dr. L. Bedana, Senior Medical Officer, CMO Imphal-East Pool, coordinated the session.

     

    The programme was conducted as part of the Weekly Health Mela, along with other activities such as the creation of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) cards and Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs.

     

    Ms. Monica began the session by introducing the audience to the MOHAN Foundation, its goals, and its objectives. She then elaborated on the following points:

     

    Organ donation and its need

    Types of donations

    Present scenario in context of organ donation.

    Simplifying brain death.

    Facts and myths about organ donation

    The story of the first deceased organ donation in Manipur

    How to pledge or sign up for organ donation

    The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation

     

    Later, Professor Deben summarised the urgent need in this field, encouraging the public by stating that he had signed up for eye donation in 2016. After a short discussion with all present, the general public accepted the organ donation pledge.

     

    At the conclusion of the session, a help desk for organ donation registration on the website of the National Organs and Tissues Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) was set up.

     

    The honourable MLA for the constituency, Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh, visited the desk and shared encouraging words about the awareness activities. In addition, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on organ donation in the local language were distributed to participants for a greater understanding of the subject. The organising committee commended the MOHAN Foundation for taking the time to advocate such a noble cause.

     

    Close to a hundred people attended the programme, and three of them committed to organ donation.
