MOHAN Foundation conducted a Session on Organ Donation at Department of Surgical Oncology, JIPMER

  • On 10th October, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation and transplantation was organized for the nurses and nursing students in the morning shift from the Department of Surgical Oncology, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and Hospital, Puducherry. Mr. Ananth R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai – deputed at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Puducherry conducted the session.

     

    Dr. Biju Pottakkat, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Dr. Pramalatha, Assistant Professor, Department of Nephrology, JIPMER took the initiative to coordinate the session.

     

    Mr. Ananth in his session he covered the following topics: types of donations – live and deceased; difference between cardiac death, brain death and coma; organs that can be donated, the number of hours the various organs can be preserved before transplantation; the importance of the donor card; role played by the nurse and transplant coordinator; organ donation norms and forms; and also about MOHAN Foundation activities.

     

    There were totally 8 nursing students and 2 nurses who participated in the session. All of them picked up a donor card.
