On May 14, 2025, MOHAN Foundation conducted an organ donation awareness session for the residents of Kshetri Awang Leikai, located in Imphal-East, Manipur. The session was led by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Program Coordinator – North East and Project Lead – Manipur, and Mr. Bidyananda Laishram, Senior Program Executive at MOHAN Foundation.
Organized as part of Urban Health Sanitation and Nutrition Day (UHSND) under the National Health Mission (NHM), the event was held in collaboration with Ms. W. Premlata, Nurse-in-Charge at the Kshetrigao Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC). Postgraduate medical students from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) also participated, delivering informative talks on nutrition and healthy dietary habits. Mr. Gailian Kamei, Transplant Coordinator at JNIMS, was also present at the session.
Ms. Monica began by introducing MOHAN Foundation and its core mission to promote organ donation across India. She highlighted the renal transplant program at JNIMS and shared information on the status of living kidney transplantation in Manipur. She then introduced the concept of deceased organ donation, emphasizing that organs from brain-dead individuals can save up to eight lives and significantly improve the quality of life for many others.
She also addressed the critical issue of illegal organ trading in India and outlined strategies for prevention, while debunking prevalent myths surrounding organ donation. Her talk encouraged greater understanding and acceptance of this life-saving practice.
The session concluded with a call to action. Ms. Monica urged participants to spread awareness within their communities and distributed FAQs on organ donation, translated into the local language for better accessibility.
Approximately 40 participants attended the session, gaining valuable insights into organ donation and its transformative potential. The initiative successfully raised awareness, addressed misconceptions, and inspired many to consider becoming organ donors and advocates for the cause.
