Final year nursing students of PIMS-Pondicherry learn about Organ Donation

  • In view of organ donation awareness week, MOHAN Foundation-Puducherry conducted a session on organ donation for the final year nursing students of Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on 10th August 2016. The final year nursing students is the new batch; they will be joining the PIMS family to render nursing service in various wards and intensive care units, so it was apt to deliver to them the concepts on organ donation.

    The session started with the video on organ donation its insight and how general public can help towards organ donation. After the video session, a presentation on organ donation was taken to the students. It was an interacting session, where more question was asked in between to make them know more about the organ donation.  The importance of whole body donation and of cornea donation and how nurses can play a pivotal role was explained to the students. The brain death certification process and panel of doctor who are involved in it were elaborated.

    Dr. Rajeeva, Dr. Karnam, Dr. Sridhar, Ms. Rose nursing superintendent attended the meeting. Around 50 students attended the session. All the students picked the donor cards and showed the interest for the organ donation and promised to help people in organ failure.  After the session Dr. Rajeeva addressed the gathering and spoke about the role of nurses during organ transplant and urged them to participate in the PIMS transplant program. Mr. Ruban spoke of the scope of transplant coordinator program conducted by MOHAN Foundation. Nearly 12 staff nurses showed an interest in attending the transplant coordinator program.
