  • On August 03, 2019 Fortis Organ Retrieval & Transplant (FORT) organized a Summit on ‘Organ Care Systems & Transportation’ at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) Gurugram. The summit marked the completion of 100 organ donations in 12 of the Fortis Hospitals across India. The event was co-hosted by MOHAN Foundation and endorsed by National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) & Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT).

Doctors from Australia, UK, Spain and India came together to identify new and emerging technologies for organ preservation and transportation with the aim to maintain or improve the quality, and ultimately the yield, of retrieved organs.

Dr. Vasanthi Ramesh, Director NOTTO spoke on the status of organ donation & transplantation in India. She spoke about the wide gap between the number of transplants awaited and the organs available. She also said that the depressing statistics convey that there was an urgent need for more people to step in and donate their organs and save the lives of those languishing due to organ failure.

Dr. Kumud Dhital (Alfred Heart & Lung, Melbourne, Australia) spoke about the first DCD heart and the current status of heart transplantation in Australia. Dr Darius Mirza (Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham) spoke on the role of Organ Care Systems (OCS) in liver transplantation and experience in India. Dr. Maria Paula Gomez (Executive Director TPM-DTI Foundation, Spain) shared the TPM model for deceased organ donation in India – leading practice implementation.

Other speakers included Dr. Sonal Asthana (Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru), Dr. Ashish Sharma (PGIMER, Chandigarh), Dr. K R Balakrishnan (Director of cardiac sciences at Fortis Malar Hospital Chennai,  Dr. J. Amalorpavanathan (Director, Institute of Vascular Surgery, Apollo Hospital, Chennai) and Dr. Avnish Seth ( Director, FORT)

Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation during the Panel discussion on “Organ donation and transportation in India” threw light on the pros and cons of using helicopters and drones for organ transportation in India. He also spoke about the cost of transportation of an organ by air, maintaining its shelf life and the security clearance issues normally encountered during the transportation of an organ.

Dr.  Avnish Seth, Director, FORT summarised the main discussion & action points in his presentation on Summary of the Summit and way forward:

    • It is not a change of culture required but a change of processes.
    • Organ Care Systems are invaluable for all organ transplants. Challenges include the cost, number of machines, transportation by air and acceptability by transplant teams.
    • Marginal or DCD donors should be utilized, in wake of organ shortage and keeping in line with the cardinal principle of organ donation that the donated organ should not go waste.
    • Newer techniques to prolong the shelf life of the organs.
    • Feasibility of the use of helicopters and drones
    • Involvement of the critical care teams
