On February 8, 2024, Dr Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation, was awarded the “Sushruta Awards 2024” by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya. The award ceremony was held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, to honour the nominees in two categories: Antodaya and Sevadharis.
The awards have been named after the father of surgery, ‘Sushruta’, whose text, the ‘Sushruta Samhita', is perhaps the oldest ancient treatise on medicine and surgery in the world. The mission of these awards is to create India’s first televised health awards, focusing on health workers, volunteers (PM-JAY, PMBJP, and social workers), doctors (district level), nurses, hospitals, medics (pharmacists), and officials behind the implementation of public health programmes.
Under the Sevadhari category of the Sushruta Awards, Dr Shroff was given this award in recognition of his initiatives in the field of organ donation. Among his initiatives was the establishment of a non-profit organisation named MOHAN Foundation in 1997 to raise the number of deceased organ donors in India. The MOHAN Foundation educates the public about organ donation and provides training to transplant coordinators and doctors on the subject.
During the award ceremony, there were multiple panel discussions. Dr Shroff participated in the panel discussion "Donate Organs, Save Lives." Dr Shroff discussed the Tamil Nadu state's achievements in deceased organ donation and MOHAN Foundation’s collaboration with other hospitals to conduct effective deceased organ donation programmes and capacity building. He also emphasised the important roles that the government and stakeholders play in policy-making related to organ donation. Additional panellists who took part in the discussion were Dr. Swarnalata, Incharge, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Telangana; Mr. Rahul Kumar Prajapati, Organ Recipient; Ms. Chetna Harsh Sanghi, Organ Donor Family; Dr. Pranjal Modi, VC, Transplant Science University, Gujarat; and Dr. Parul, Transplant Coordinator, PGIMR, Chandigarh.
After the panel discussion, a keynote presentation was presented on the same topic by Dr Anil Kumar, Director, National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).
