  • On June 14, 2026, MOHAN Foundation conducted a Cornea Donation Awareness session for the residents of Sri Satyanarayana Charitable Trust, Chennai. The session was attended by 21 senior citizens residing in the premises of the trust. Simultaneously, a team from Sankara Nethralaya supported by Dr. Krishna Kumar was conducting an eye screening camp for both in-patients and out-patients, providing an opportunity to extend cornea donation awareness to the camp beneficiaries as well. Approximately 11 out-patients were reached through the awareness initiative.

Ms. Kanishka, Project Executive, MOHAN Foundation, conducted the awareness session on cornea donation. She explained the structure and function of the cornea, how a single cornea donor can help restore sight to two individuals with corneal blindness, and the basic precautions to be followed for successful cornea donation. The session also covered eligibility criteria for cornea donation and the importance of informing family members about one's wish to donate.

The residents actively participated in the discussion and raised several questions. Common queries included whether advanced age would affect the usefulness of donated corneas, whether corneas from elderly donors would be used for transplantation, and whether individuals with retinal or optic nerve-related conditions could still donate their corneas.

Following the session, Ms. B Janani, Intern, MOHAN Foundation, distributed information brochures on cornea donation to the out-patients attending the eye camp. She also provided a brief explanation about cornea donation and the process of pledging as an eye donor. Several individuals expressed interest in discussing the decision with their family members and considering eye donation pledges in the future.

Information brochures on cornea donation were distributed to all participants and beneficiaries covered during the programme. The session helped improve awareness about corneal blindness, dispel common misconceptions, and encourage conversations about eye donation among senior citizens and members of the public.

MOHAN Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to Mr. Sekar and Ms. Shantha of Sri Satyanarayana Charitable Trust for providing the opportunity to conduct the awareness programme. Special thanks are also due to Dr. Krishna Kumar for his valuable support and coordination in facilitating the session.
