CME on “Deceased Organ Donation and Transplantation” at the Justice K.S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Mangalore

  • A CME on “Deceased Organ Donation and Transplantation” was conducted at the Justice K.S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Mangalore on 10th December 2016". The CME was organized by the Department of Nephrology, Justice K.S Hegde Charitable Hospital with the aim of sensitizing doctors, nurses and students (medical and paramedical) on the various aspects of organ donation and transplantation - medical, legal and counseling. This initiative was supported by MOHAN Foundation and Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK).

     

    The inaugural function was graced by Prof. (Dr.) M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor, Nitte University. Dr. B. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Dean, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Dr. P. S. Prakash, Vice Dean & Head, Dept. of Medicine, KSHEMA, Major (Dr) Shivakumar Hiremath, Medical Superintendent, KS Hegde Hospital were also present during the inauguration.

     

    The CME had the following sessions addressed

    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act & its amendments - Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation
    • Identification & Certification of Brain Death   - Dr. Sridhar Nagaiyan, Senior Consultant, In-charge, Intensive Care Unit, Kauvery Hospitals, Chennai
    • Maintenance of a potential Deceased brain dead donor - Dr. Sudhesh Rao, Consultant – Intensive Care Unit, AJ hospital, Mangalore
    • Overview of organ donation & Organ donation process in Karnataka - Dr. Kishore Babu, Secretary, ZCCK
    • Role of a Transplant Coordinator – Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi, MOHAN Foundation

     

    The CME also had a panel discussion at the end which had the experts from various hospitals in Mangalore and Goa. The panelists were

    • Dr. (Col) M Dayananda, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal
    • Dr. Prashanth Marla, Medical Director, A J Hospital & Research Centre, Mangalore
    • Dr. Ravindra Prabhu, Prof & Head, Dept. of Nephrology, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal
    • Dr. Kishore Babu, Secretary, ZCCK
    • Dr. Amol Mahaldar, Consultant Nephrologist, Goa Medical College

     

    Around 50 delegates participated in the CME. The CME culminated with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shobhana Nayak Rao, Associate Professor & Head, Dept. of Nephrology, Justice K.S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
