  • IBM, software consulting firm for different sectors has organized awareness sessions across all its office locations in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon. This is through the initiative of one of the IBM employees- Rajeev Grover, a kidney recipient himself and a volunteer at MOHAN Foundation.

The first of these sessions was held on October 11, 2012 at Noida. While discussing different aspects of organ donation through a presentation, Manisha Gupta- Programme Manager also handled queries like how long does it take to remove the organs, can organs be transported from one city to another, what if the person has not pledged his organs and the family would still like to donate, etc. Other aspects like duration within which organs should be transplanted (Ischemic time), how long a person can survive artificially after brain death were handled by Dr Muneet Sahi- Transplant Co-ordinator. About 15 participants attended the session.

Employees, who could not attend the presentation due to work obligations, visited the stall in small groups of 3-5 people. They were sensitized on the subject through the mass mailer which was shared by the HR team at IBM before the talk and had many queries like why can’t we give organs in natural death, Is it necessary to carry the donor card at all times , what if at the time of death my family refuses to donate my organs etc.

Some who pledged their organs also wanted suggestions on how to convince their family members on the cause so that the ultimate goal of saving one’s life can actually be achieved.

In all, 65 leaflets and 25 donor cards were distributed.  Many others who wanted more information have shared their email ID’s with Rajeev Grover, who has take upon himself to create an in house IBM community group on the subject of Organ Donation which will be available on their intranet. Manisha Gupta is coordinating to provide material was this purpose.

MOHAN Foundation’s team is sure of the fact that lot of people will come forward to pledge their organs once the IBM community group is set up and operational.
