On July 09, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Ultrasound Waiting Area, NHAK, as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was conducted by Mr. Lirenthung N. Kithan, Project Lead, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland, and attended by Ms. Sedekieno Rino, Programme Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland.
Mr. Lirenthung began the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its vision, and its initiatives in promoting organ donation across the country. He informed the participants that MOHAN Foundation has initiated its activities in Nagaland in collaboration with Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) to promote human organ donation and transplantation in the state.
He explained the concept of organ donation and highlighted how it offers a second chance at life to individuals suffering from end-stage organ failure. Participants were informed about when organ donation can take place and who can become an organ donor. He also explained the opt-in system followed in India, emphasising that the consent of the donor's family is essential for deceased organ donation. A clear distinction between coma and brain death was also presented to help participants better understand the concept of brain death and its significance in organ donation.
Further, he briefed the participants on the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, explaining that the Act prohibits the commercial trade of human organs and legally recognises brain death as death, thereby permitting deceased organ donation and transplantation under the provisions of the law.
The importance of eye donation was also highlighted, with participants learning that only the cornea is retrieved for transplantation and that corneal retrieval can be performed at home by a trained doctor or technician after death. Common myths and misconceptions about organ donation were addressed, and participants were encouraged to share the knowledge gained with their families and communities to promote greater awareness.
Ms. Sedekieno distributed the informational brochure on Organ Donation to the participants to further enhanced their understanding of organ donation and its life-saving potential.
A total of 23 participants attended the session.
