  • On February 27, 2023, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation for the students pursuing livelihood training at the ICICI Academy for Skills, Karol Bagh, New Delhi. Ms. Isha Bajaj Sharma, Faculty and Center In-Charge, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, New Delhi, approached Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation NCR, via phone call to organise the OD session for the new ongoing batch of the academy. MF NCR office has already conducted the OD session for the previously ongoing batches in the month of November 2023. Ms. Simran was the resource person.

Ms. Isha welcomed the MF faculty and introduced them to the students and the purpose of the talk. Ms. Simran took a short introductory round with the students and formed a rapport with them. She began the session by asking participants about their understanding of organ donation. Participants from both groups engaged in a highly interactive discussion about the topic.

The following topics were explained with the help of a PowerPoint presentation

    • The importance of organ donation in society

    • When and how does organ donation take place?

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Transplant waiting list in India

    • Brain death

    • difference between brain death and coma

    • Role of the MOHAN Foundation

    • Myths and facts about organ donation

    • Eye donation

Participants shared their views on every topic discussed in the session. Many of them shared their willingness to donate their organs. They got very motivated when their faculty member, Ms. Isha, shared her experience, as she shared with the previous batches too, of pledging for OD and convincing her spouse and family to do the same.

Participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries. To name a few:

    • What is the difference between a coma and brain death?

    • Why does the law allow only blood relatives and close relatives to donate organs in a living donation?

    • Can someone donate a cornea while having weak eyesight?

Close to 50 students participated in the session.
