On April 20, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, conducted an awareness session on organ and tissue donation at the waiting area of Out Patient Department (OPD), JNIMS, as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was led by Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh and Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi, Program Executives at MOHAN Foundation.
Ms. Priya initiated the session by introducing the team and delivering a comprehensive overview of organ and tissue donation. She explained the different organs and tissues that can be donated and clearly differentiated between living and deceased donation. She emphasized the life-saving importance of organ transplantation for patients with end-stage organ failure. She also highlighted that a single deceased donor can save up to eight lives, illustrating the profound and far-reaching impact of organ donation on society.
Ms. Priya also highlighted the key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) 1994, emphasizing that any form of commercial trade in human organs is a punishable offence under the law. She further explained the process of pledging organs, outlining the steps individuals can take to formally register as organ donors. She stressed the importance of informing family members about one’s decision so that the donor’s wishes are respected and honoured. To reinforce the key messages shared during the session, FAQs on organ and tissue donation were distributed to the participants.
Approximately 25 individuals gained a better understanding of the importance and process of organ donation.
