  • On May 04, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Eye Out Patient Department (OPD), JNIMS, as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was led by Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi and Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh, Program Executives at MOHAN Foundation.

Ms. Priya commenced the session by introducing the team, followed by an in-depth and comprehensive overview of organ donation. She elucidated the various organs that can be donated and distinctly differentiated between living and deceased donation. Furthermore, she provided detailed insights into cornea donation, emphasizing that corneal retrieval can also be carried out at the donor’s residence. She also underscored that a single deceased donor has the potential to save up to eight lives, thereby highlighting the profound and far-reaching impact of organ donation on individuals as well as the broader community.

Ms. Priya went on to explain the salient provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, emphasizing that the buying and selling of human organs is strictly prohibited and punishable by law. She also guided participants through the process of pledging organs, detailing how individuals can formally register as donors. Stressing the role of family consent, she urged participants to share their decision with their loved ones so that their wishes may be upheld. To further strengthen understanding, frequently asked questions (FAQs) on organ donation were distributed among the participants.

Approximately 15 individuals gained a better understanding of the importance and process of organ donation.
