Awareness Session on Organ Donation at the Plastic Surgery Ward, AIIMS Rishikesh

  • On June 10, 2025, the Division of Organ Transplant at AIIMS Rishikesh, in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation, conducted the nineteenth session in its ongoing series to raise awareness about organ donation. This session, held in the Plastic Surgery Ward, was aimed at sensitizing nursing officers to the importance and process of organ donation.

     

    The session was led by Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader at MOHAN Foundation, stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh. It was attended by nursing staff from the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery.

     

    Mr. Arora opened the session with an introduction to MOHAN Foundation, outlining its mission and objectives in the field of organ donation and transplantation. He delivered a comprehensive presentation covering the following key topics:

    • Importance of organ donation and donor eligibility criteria

    • Differences between living and deceased donation

    • Organ donation during life and after death

    • Brain death vs. coma, and the medical process of brain death declaration

    • Eye and skin donation, including cornea preservation post-mortem

    • Overview of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Living kidney transplant services available at AIIMS Rishikesh

    • How individuals can support the cause of organ donation

    • Myths and facts associated with organ donation

     

    Mr. Arora emphasized the urgent need for organ donors in India and encouraged attendees to start conversations on the topic with their families and communities. He also recommended the film Aye Zindagi (available on Zee5) for a deeper understanding of the emotional and social aspects of organ donation.

     

    In addition, Mr. Arora highlighted the role of AIIMS Rishikesh’s brain death committee and donor optimization protocols. He illustrated these processes through a recent successful organ donation case at the hospital.

     

    Approximately 12 nursing officers participated in the session and acknowledged its significance in enhancing their understanding and empowering them to support organ donation efforts within their professional and personal circles.
