Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Surgical Complex, Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College, Nagpur – Session 2

  • On 10th July 2019, MOHAN Foundation in association with Transplants – Help The Poor Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at Surgical complex in Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College (IGMC), Nagpur on the occasion of their Foundation Day. Dr Vaishali C Shelgaonkar (HOD of Department of Anaesthesiology) of Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College, Nagpur arranged the session for class four and attendants including BVG cleaning department.

    BVG India Limited is an India’s Largest Integrated Company of Pune. The session which began around 02:45 pm was attended by about 50 staffs.

    Ms. Prarthana Dwivedi introduced MOHAN Foundation and Transplants – Help The Poor Foundation. She asked about the organ donation to the gathering so as all were non-medicos they were totally blank and had no idea about the organ donation and they know about eye donation only.

    Ms. Prarthana explained the concepts of organ Donation, why and when is a transplantation required, various organs that can be donated, types of donors, types of death, viability of organs after retrieval. She also explained the difference between Brain death and Cardiac Death. She also elaborated the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, and discussed about the myths and misconceptions related to organ donation. She also briefed about Skin donation, Eye donation, Organ donation and Body donation.

    Crowd asked the following were a few questions asked:

    • Can burn patient donate eye?
    •  In natural death (at home)can we donate eye &whom to contact first?

    Ms. Prarthana answered all the queries promptly. Thereafter she shared with audience how they could take the pledge and also how important it was to share the wish with their loved ones.
