Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Smartkidz International School, Kengeri, Bangalore

  • On 27th April 2019, Mr. Rakesh - Founder-CEO, Mrs. Usha Rakesh - Principal Secretary and Mr. Srinivas Founder of Smartkidz International School, Nagadevanahalli in Bangalore invited MOHAN Foundation to organize an awareness session on organ donation in the school premises for parents.

     

    Banners, brochures, posters and pictorial presentation of different organs were the tools used in the session. Ms. Hemavathi - Transplant Coordinator introduced MOHAN Foundation and Mr. Marulappa, Transplant Coordinator spoke about the importance of donor cards and consent forms. Mrs. Ranjini Shankar M S - Project Manager, spoke about brain stem death.

     

    The topics listed below were discussed:

     

    • Types of death
    • What organs can be donated after circulatory death, brain steam death, and while living
    • Difference between coma and brain death
    • Apnea Test
    • Who can donate organs
    • Waiting list available for organ failure patients
    • How organ failure patients can register their names at Jeevasarthakathe (State Board Karnataka)
    • MOHAN Foundation activities
    • Importance of ventilator in a brain dead patient

     

    Around 37 parents attended the session and a few voluntarily discussed the procedure to pledge organs and said that they will sign consent forms after discussing with their families.

     

    A few questions asked by the parents:

     

    • Why a person in a coma cannot donate organs
    • What is an apnea test
    • How to pledge organs
    • Why a person who dies at home naturally cannot donate the organs like heart, liver, kidney and pancreas
