Awareness Session on Organ Donation at College of Home Economics, Hauz Khas, New Delhi

  • On August 13, 2025, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Delhi, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the College of Home Economics (CHE), Hauz Khas, New Delhi. The programme was organized by CHE students who are also members of the Rotary Club, New Delhi, and was attended by students from the Journalism Department.

     

    Ms. Mansi Khurana, a second-year Journalism student, extended a warm welcome to MOHAN Foundation and introduced the resource person, Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation, NCR.

     

    Ms. Simran opened the session by introducing the concept of organ donation and sharing interesting facts about the youngest and oldest donors in recorded history. To simplify complex medical concepts, she screened a short educational film on “brain death” and explained the critical difference between brain death and legal death. She also emphasized the importance of “consent” in organ donation after death and walked the audience through the steps involved in the declaration of brain death.

     

    The session provided participants with a deeper understanding of organ donation and its life-saving potential. Key topics covered included:

    • The need for organ donation

    • Status of organ donation in India

    • When and how organ donation takes place

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Transplant law

    • Cornea donation

    • Brain death

    • Contraindications to organ donation

    • Role of MOHAN Foundation

    • Role of individuals and society in raising awareness

    • Myths and facts related to organ donation

    • Causes of brain death

    • Difference between brain death and coma

     

    Some of the questions raised by participants were:

    • What does the term “green corridor” mean?

    • If a person has pledged organ donation but the family refuses consent, what happens?

    • Who should individuals approach if they wish to donate their eyes?

     

    In response, Ms. Simran explained the process of organ donor pledging and highlighted the importance of family discussions about organ donation. She also outlined different ways in which participants could contribute to spreading awareness and spoke about the significance of grief counselling in brain death cases.

     

    The session was well-received and attended by nearly 45 participants.
