Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Air Force Station, Gurgaon

  • On 13th August, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation was organised for the officers and airmen of 54 ASP, Air Force Station, Gurgaon. It was initiated by Wing Commander B. S. Yadav, Flight Commander HRM Flight, Air Force Station, Gurgaon. He invited MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR to conduct the session.

     

    Dr. Muneeth Sahi, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR represented the Foundation at the session. Dr. Sahi was welcomed by the Commanding Officer of the station - Group Captain AK Pan and was conducted to the conference hall where a gathering of 59 Air Force Personnel were given a 30 minute presentation. After which; one participant shared his personal experience of donating his father’s body to a medical college for academic purpose. The session was interactive and some queries were raised towards the end. Few of the issues that were discussed: brain death could occur not necessarily by trauma but also by systemic disease such as hypertension, timing of organ donation and if it could be a last minute decision, contraindications to organ donation and the use of signing a donor card if the family's consensus is the most important factor at the time of donation.

     

    Fliers with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and answers about organ donation were distributed. 43 participants picked up the donor card.

     

    The Commanding Officer requested the Foundation to conduct a similar session for the women at the Air Force Station and also for the guards of the Defence Security Corps (DSC) contingent in the near future.
