  • On May 7, 2015 an awareness session was organized by MOHAN Foundation at Shri Ram School, Moulsari, Gurgaon.

    Ms.
Shail Mehra, one of the teachers at the school, took an initiative for the talk. She felt that the children should be made aware about the concept of organ donation in a sensitive manner. The aim of the session was to sensitize the students who would further the knowledge gained among the other students in the school and other groups of people and thus become, ’change makers,’ role models for change.

Ms Pallavi Kumar started the session by asking questions like which organs can be donated while we are alive and what is brain death so as to gauge the information level of the students. As the session got under way, she explained the other concepts of organ donation and transplantation primarily focusing on the types of donations, how to diagnose brain death, tissue donation, the Transplant Law of India, difference between cardiac and brain death and myths related to organ donation. Special mention about eye donation and how each of us could contribute towards the cause was also stressed upon.

A 5-minute video on brain death was shown when the concept of brain death was being addressed. The students were bright and knowledgeable, and actively took part in the discussion. There was a barrage of questions following the presentation, some actually took the MOHAN staff by surprise. One child wanted to know what would be done in case a pregnant women is declared brain death, if the child be saved or the lives of other people. Another asked what would be left of the body if the organs were taken away, what shape the body would be in.

Approximately 300 students from classes 11th and 12th attended the session.
