A young woman organises a talk on Organ Donation on International Women's Day

  • On 8th March 2016, PMR College of Engineering, Maduravoyal Chennai, conducted an awareness programme on Organ Donation for their students. This was an initiative of Ms. Prema, student of PMR College, who approached Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu to give an awareness talk on Organ Donation.  On her own, she has been speaking about organ donation to her classmates and then decided that she should address the whole student body of her college.

     

    Ms. Gieetha, Transplant Coordinator was deputed from MOHAN Foundation to address the gathering.  The programme began with a welcome address by Ms. Prema and she explained the importance of event and the noble cause. Following that the coordinator was felicitated and Ms. Gieetha started with Concepts of Organ Donation. There were 2 sessions conducted.

     

    The following topics were covered in her talks:

    • Activities of MOHAN Foundation across the country to strengthen the Deceased Organ Donation programme
    • Types of Organ Donation - Live and Deceased Donation
    • Difference between Brain death and Coma
    • Donor card  & Importance of the consent from the family
    • Tissues and organs  that can be donated
    • Information sources -Helpline Number and websites

    Totally 100 students participated in the programme, and 65 students signed as organ donors.
