On July 16, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, Uttarakhand, conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the nursing staff of the Department of Critical Care at Doon Medical College and Hospital, Dehradun. The session was organized at the invitation of Dr. Atul Kumar Singh, Nodal Officer, SOTTO Uttarakhand.
Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader, MOHAN Foundation, stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh, served as the resource speaker and was accompanied by Mr. Mukesh, Transplant Coordinator, SOTTO Uttarakhand, and Mr. Arun Sharma, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Uttarakhand.
Mr. Sanchit commenced the session by interacting with participants to understand their existing knowledge of organ donation and subsequently delivered an informative talk on the importance of organ donation, donor eligibility, living and deceased donation, brain death and its distinction from coma, eye and skin donation, common myths and facts, and the initiatives of MOHAN Foundation, including the Anudaan programme.
To enhance participants' understanding of the concept of brain stem death, he also screened a short educational video explaining the process of brain stem death certification and its significance in deceased organ donation.
Subsequently, Dr. Atul Kumar Singh elaborated on the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, explaining the legal and ethical framework governing organ donation and transplantation in India. He also highlighted the responsibilities of healthcare professionals in the deceased organ donation process and emphasized the importance of adhering to established protocols to ensure ethical and transparent practices.
Highlighting the pivotal role of critical care nursing officers in identifying potential organ donors and supporting donor families, Mr. Sanchit emphasized the need for timely identification, effective communication, and multidisciplinary coordination to strengthen deceased organ donation. The session concluded with an interactive discussion during which participants raised queries regarding brain stem death certification, donor management, and the responsibilities of nursing professionals in the organ donation process.
The participants appreciated the initiative undertaken by MOHAN Foundation and expressed their commitment to promoting organ donation within their professional practice and communities.
Approximately 50 nursing officers attended the session.
