“Angels of Change” training for students of MMM College of Nursing

  • Inspired by the awareness program conducted on 09th August 2017 at Ayyapakkam Village, Nursing students from Madras Medical Mission (MMM) College of Nursing came to MOHAN Foundation Chennai for a unique program called “Angels of Change” Volunteers Training” to know more about Organ Donation. 25 students accompanied by their teacher Ms. Sasi Mohan attended the training.

    The session started with an introduction on MOHAN Foundation and a video showing Tamil Nadu leads the way in Organ donation in India. Followed by the video Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer of MOHAN Foundation went through the resource manual and the CD which had a full detail on Organ Donation so that the volunteers can learn and do any events. While explaining the CD Dr. Hemal Kanvinde made some volunteers come forward and do a mock presentation.

    Ms. Ann Alex, Program Associate gave a presentation on the methods of doing public awareness program on the target group of people, she gave ideas on how to promote this social cause in their college as well any other places.

    Mr. Siva Shankar, Helpline executive gave an overview of the website with special practice session on registering in the website and registering as donor and taking the survey. This exercise helps them to speak with authority to the others about donor registration. Then the students practiced on an online course called “Teachers Toolkit” by Chris Klug Foundation. This made the students realise how simple activities can be used to raise awareness in the public.

    Mr. Ruban Victor, Transplant Coordinator discussed about the Donor Coordination, when a patient arrives in the hospital, what will be the procedures for a transplant coordinator to get consent from the family members. The session went on for half an hour with an active questions and answer session at the end.  

    Explanation on donor coordination was followed by reading a donor memorial of Aishwarya, a teenage girl who donated her organs. The students were asked to think that they are a recipient and write a thank you letter to the Aishwarya’s family.

    There was a break for lunch. The session continued with a session on recipient coordination by Ms. Priya Jebakaran, Thoracic Organ Transplant Coordinator from Madras Medical Mission. She shared her life experience by becoming a transplant coordinator. She further introduced a heart recipient Mr. Manikandan who underwent a heart transplant in Frontier Lifeline hospital, Chennai on 16th December 2011. He continued the session with his experience before and after transplant, he also mentioned that he lost his brother to the same disease, since they were not aware that transplant is an option. Ms. Priya Jebakaran supported Mr. Manikandan throughout and he mentioned for his health issues he continues to first consult his transplant coordinator.

    The program ended with a visit to the skin bank and blood bank in Right Hospitals. The volunteers visited the blood bank and the skin bank. Ms. Deepa explained how the skin is extracted from a human body after death, quality and safety concerns of the tissue and how it is distributed. MOHAN Foundation thanks Ms. Deepa and Dr. G. Balakrishnan of Right Hospitals for sparing their time and explained about blood and skin donation.  The training ended with an evaluation of the sessions.
