Organ Donation awareness talk at NSS camp Sir Thyagraya College

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited by NSS volunteers of Sir Thyagraya College of Arts and Science on 17th September 2017 for an awareness session on Organ Donation. This session was part of their seven day camp in Manali a town in North Chennai. Mr. Siva Shankar from MOHAN Foundation was deputed a resource person.

    Dr. Gopinathan, lecturer of the college introduced Mr. Siva Shankar to the volunteers. Mr. Siva Shankar took over the session by giving a brief about the activities of MOHAN Foundation. He started by asking a question “What is Organ Donation?” to the volunteers there were various answers from them.

    He explained various concepts of organ donation such as - the organs that can be donated at three stages – while living, after cardiac death and after brain death. He stressed on the difference between Brain death and coma as everyone was confused.  The topics that were discussed further were:

    1. Age criteria for the Organ Donation
    2. Causes of Brain Death
    3. Organ allocation by TRANSTAN
    4. DONOR Card

    The session went on 1 hour and ended with a Q & A Session. Some questions that were raised are:

    1.     If the donor had Blood Cancer can the organs gets donated?
    2. If a donor card is taken and parents are not informed, then will the donor’s wish be fulfilled?

    There were 50 students from 2nd and 3rd year B.COM department attending the camp, 15 picked their donor cards in support of Organ Donation. MOHAN Foundation thanks the volunteers of Sir Thyagraya College and Dr. Gopinathan who organized this program.
