Students of a Government College in Nagpur learn about Organ Donation

  • Mr. Bulu Behera, Transplant Coordinator at MOHAN Foundation, was invited as a speaker at an organ donation awareness event organized for the students of Vasantrao Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Sciences, Nagpur. Dr. Anil Bankar, the NSS In-charge and Assistant Professor of the college organized the event, which was held at an old age home in Deoli on 31st January 2020.

    Dr. Bankar welcomed the speaker and the audience. Mr. Bulu Behera, in his talk, introduced MOHAN Foundation and explained about organ and tissue donation.

    Mr. Behera presented in detail, a wide range of topics, including the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, listing the offences and penalties related to malpractices in organ donation. The following topics were discussed in detail:

    • What is organ failure and its causes?
    • Who can donate organs?
    • When can organs be donated?
    • What is living donation?
    • Natural death and brain death
    • Brain death and coma
    • Age criteria to donate organ
    • What is the time period to donate organ?
    • Myths and misconceptions around organ donation
    • How to register as an organ donor?
    • What is the role of hospitals in organ donation?

     

    Mr. Bulu Behera answered the questions raised by the participants. 50 students were present at the event and 10 registered as organ donors and received their donor cards. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to Dr. Bankar and the institute for the opportunity.
