Rotary Club Southeast Delhi invited MOHAN Foundation for a session on organ donation at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

  • The Rotary Club Southeast Delhi invited MOHAN Foundation to conduct a session on organ donation for its members on September 15, 2023. The meeting was held in New Delhi's India Habitat Centre. The session was organised by club president Dr. Rajeev Ranjan. On August 21, 2023, Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director of MF Delhi NCR had conducted a session for the Rotary Club of Gurugram. Dr. Rajeev, who had attended the session in Gurugram, requested that she conduct a session for the Southeast Delhi Rotary group. Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MF Delhi NCR, accompanied Ms. Pallavi.

     

    Ms. Reeta Singh, a Rotarian, greeted Ms. Pallavi and introduced her to the other Rotarians. Ms. Pallavi began the discussion by inquiring about the participants' familiarity with organ donation. Numerous of them shared their personal experiences with it. Then, she used a PowerPoint presentation to explain organ donation. The concept of "brain death" was illustrated by a brief educational film. In addition, she clarified the concept of "consent" as it pertains to organ donation, legal death, and the numerous steps required to declare brain death.

     

    The following subjects were discussed in depth:

     

    • Organ donation and its need

    • Status of organ donation in India

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Transplant Law

    • Cornea donation

    • Brain death

    • Causes of brain death

    • Differences between brain death and coma

    • Contraindications to organ donation

    • Role of the MOHAN Foundation

    • The role of individuals and the public in creating awareness of organ donation

    • Organ donation myths and facts

     

    Participants engaged in an interactive discussion and shared their experiences during the session. A Rotarian described how his sibling died due unavailability of organ.

     

    During the lecture, the following points were discussed in depth:

     

    • Why can’t solid organs be donated in circulatory death?

    • What is the difference between persistent and vegetative state of coma?

    • If a person is on their deathbed, is it permissible to place them on a ventilator for organ donation?

    • Can the family members of a brain-dead individual obtain their organs if they are in need?

    Is there a government hospital that performs transplants?

     

    Mr. Manoj Jain, president of the club, expressed gratitude and thanks to Ms. Pallavi Kumar and the MOHAN Foundation for the informative session.

     

    Close to 25 Rotarians attended the meeting.
