To mark ‘World Kidney Day’, Kauvery Hospital, Tiruchirappalli in association with MOHAN Foundation and Rotary Club of Tiruchirappalli Elite organized an awareness programme on 20th March 2016 at Hotel Sangam, Tiruchirappalli. The event had two elements - sensitization session for Kauvery Hospital’s staff & ‘Organ Donor Meet’ - a public education campaign.
The sensitization session was attended by about 50 paramedical and non-medical staff of Kauvery Hospital. Mrs. S. Sujatha, MOHAN Foundation addressed the gathering on ‘Concepts of Organ Donation and Transplantation’. Participants’ queries regarding the brain death concept, the procedures involved in deceased organ donation, the legal aspects of live and cadaveric donation were answered during the session.
Followed that the public education campaign ‘Organ Donor Meet’ was held for which cine fame director cum actor Mr. Visu was the chief guest. He spoke very movingly about organ donation and praised the doctors who selflessly work to save lives. As a kidney failure patient himself, Mr. Visu shared his experience and difficulties that he is facing and how his life revolves around the dialysis machine. The event also saw the experience sharing by the transplant recipients and organ donors (living donation renal transplant) which was very touching. The audience was moved by seeing the recipients and how transplant has transformed their lives.
The organ donor card was launched during the programme. The event also saw the launch of mobile phone applications on renal disease in Tamil and an organ donor pledge registry. At the end of the programme, many people have expressed their support for organ donation by taking a pledge to be an organ donor.
