Organ Donation Talk at Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur

  • Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Expert member of Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) Nagpur and Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur was invited to talk on Deceased Organ Donation to the staff of Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur on 7th April 2016.  Dr. Sameer Paltewar Chairman and Managing Director of the Institute gave a brief about the subject of Transplant and also introduced Dr. Ravi Wankhede to the audience consisting of doctors and para-medical staff. Dr. Paltewar informed that the Institute has applied for registration of organ transplantation and is hoping to start transplant very soon.

    Dr. Ravi Wankhede gave a PPP on types of Organ donation including historical, legal, social and Medical highlights of the need to for donating organs and tissues. He said organ donation and transplantation is considered a medical miracle, which was possible because of the magnanimity of the people who decide to donate organs while alive and the family members who consent to donate organs of their beloved family members. He said the tradition of cremating or burying the dead bodies should be preceded by eye and skin donation as there were several eye banks and also a skin bank. He informed the audience that we are 50% deficient of eyes (corneas) donation as also the need to donate skin to save people suffering from burns. He later stressed on the huge potential of donating organs and tissues when someone suffers ‘brain death’. He told the audience that as many as eight people can get life saving organs such as two kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, intestines, etc from such patients thereby doing a great humanitarian service. He emphasized the need to understand that a person who is brain dead is practically dead and if his organs are kept functional the relatives should consent as early as possible. He said this way their loved ones will be helping several people, which would give them immense satisfaction. He said that the country as a whole is way behind several developed countries where organ donation from brain dead was a routine practice. This was due to unawareness, ignorance, religious misconceptions and general apathy towards social cause. Dr. Wankhede said there was immense scope for Meditrina to contribute in conducting deceased organ donation due to the dedicated staff and advanced expertise available at its resources. He said that the staff in ICU play a important role in detecting Brain dead and should make an effort to sensitise the relatives. Dr. Wankhede told the CMD that the Transplant Coordinators at MOHAN Foundation will be ever willing to provide counseling whenever it would be required.

    At the end of the talk there were some questions on the subject which were answered by Dr. Ravi Wankhede. Meditrina Institute Of Medical Sciences is already equipped with twin OT with pass box joining them, the prime requirement for transplant surgeries. Dr. Sameer Paltewar, CMD Meditrina Institute Of Medical Sciences spoke of his ideas of having an organ bank going ahead. Dr. Anand Sancheti Cardiac Surgeon was keen to start heart transplant and wanted a list of patients to be registered with the ZTCC. At the end of the session Dr. Russel Lawrie the General Manager of Meditrina proposed a vote of thanks to Dr. Ravi Wankhede and the Transplant Coordinators Ms. Veena Wathore, Ms. Kanchan and Mr. Bulu who helped organize the talk.
